Curriculum Our curriculum will take us from the causes of the Civil War to the Modern America. Our units will comply with the Delaware State Standards for this time period. Students will develop skills in the following areas: historical analysis, chronological thinking, historical comprehension, historical interpretation, historical research, critical thinking, and applicable knowledge.
Units The textbook curriculum is formatted in the following: 6 Units, 3-5 Chapters in each unit, 3-5 Sections in each chapter.
The units are: Unit 5 The Nation Breaks Apart Chapters 16-17 Unit 6 A Growing America Chapters 18-20 Unit 7 The Beginning of Modern America Chapters 21-23 Unit 8 Boom Times and Challenges Chapters 24-26 Unit 9 Postwar America Chapters 27-29 Unit 10 Modern America Chapter 30
Curriculum Enrichment Tools The units will be supplemented with: current events, simulation games, map activities and worksheets, project assignments, primary and secondary source documents, related literature, and various multimedia presentations.
Students will be given powerpoint notes per chapter. Some we will do in class and at times they will have to do it on their own. These notes are essential for reviewing for the test.
Grading
Homework will involve reading, answering questions from the textbook, completing notes from the class.
Tests are given after each Chapter. I will give at least 5 days’ notice prior to the test. Most tests will be computerized. They are comprised of multiple choice and short answer.
Projects: Students will be asked to complete individual and group projects throughout the year related to the curriculum.
Students will also have a research project in English class midway through the year that will be based on a Social Studies topic. Students should be thinking about that topic now. (Subject to change)
Classroom participation is very important. Student engagement in the class is essential to optimal learning. Inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated.
